When I first launched into a self-hosted blog I used Just Host. I didn’t know what I was doing and chose them mainly for the price.
Two years after using them I had to dump them because were insanely SLOW. Plus, they had actually cancelled my subscription with them one time because I apparently used to much CPU.
Since leaving them I have began using Dream Host. I have never had any major issues with them. A little bit of down time here and there but that is to be expected with shared hosting.
Last Sunday they started upgrading some stuff and I lost my site (along with anybody who was on that hardware). My site is back up, sort of. I am still missing 99% of my images. This is what they have told me:
Unfortunately, our admins have determined that the data on the backup machine is very outdated. Your home directories are still mounted to the backup machine over NFS. However, many will notice that their websites are displaying old content or returning blank pages. Since many user home directories did not exist on the backup machine.
Our admins are confident that they will be able to restore the data from the old hardware. They are currently working towards repairing the disk on the old machine. However, your sites will be outdated and/or missing content until we are able to repair the disk on the old machine.
We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing. We will update this post again tomorrow morning unless there is a change in status which necessitates additional notification.
It’s been 5 days and I am still in the same predicament.
This post isn’t meant to say anything bad about Dream Host. Rather, I wanted to say that I understand that this business is run by real people and that they aren’t perfect. I’m sure they are doing they best they can.
If you are trying to access some cute slideshows of Max, then you will have to wait until Dream Host can have Mosaic Mercy back up and running at 100%.
