VISAS!!!!

VISAS!!!!

I am so excited!  David and I headed for the Foreign Affairs office here Peine.  They sent us a letter recently telling us when they would be open to take us.  I could not understand the whole letter so I tried Google Translate to see if it could help me.  All I got was that we could come in this week and pay for our visas.  So this left David and I questioning if we could only pay for it and wait longer for something else to happen until we could receive our visas.  Also we did not know if we could do it by ourselves or if we needed a friend's assistance to speak in German.  Well, we had not time...

My White Asparagus Story

My White Asparagus Story

When I had my first encounter with white asparagus, we were on the road. We drove by these fields that were covered with some kind of tarps. I asked my friend what was growing underneath. I found out is was albino asparagus. Well, I knew that white asparagus was a delicacy here in Germany and everyone has to try it. I thought, this is our third time to Germany. It is time to try the white asparagus. So a friend helped me buy some, and taught me how to use it. First I learned that you must peel it. This was new for me because I have never peeled green asparagus before. Then you boil it until...

Softball in Germany?

Softball in Germany?

Who would have thought Germans played softball? Okay, so maybe it is a game put on by German and American friends just having a good time together.  There were a lot of people that showed up on that June day 2010.  It seemed hot, but to my amazement later that was the nice weather.  There was a game scheduled earlier, but it was too cold and rainy.  Now it is July, 90 degrees F, and no air-conditioning.  It almost seems that German weather is a fickle pickle like it is in mid-west America. So many people came that day that we had to split into 4 different teams: I believe they all had descriptive...

Peine Freischießen

Peine Freischießen

Peine Freischießen - Night Style from David & Amanda Knapp on Vimeo. Night Style Night Style is the twisty twirly ride in the video. We are told that Peine has the biggest Freischießen in the world but this might be because it is the only Freischießen in the world. Every other city in Germany has Schützenfest. Would you ride this?

First German Birthday Party

First German Birthday Party

We were invited to our first German birthday party.  I think it is common in America when you are older that other people take notice of your birthday and throw you a birthday party.  Well, in Germany it is a bit different.  You throw your own party.  According to our experience, we were invited, and you are to bring a gift. We arrived to a house full of friends, huge salad buffet, and grilling galore, however I don't recall seeing a birthday cake.  All done by the birthday couple.  Our friends were celebrating their birthdays together.  I cannot imagine the price they had to pay for all that...

Germany won Eurovision 2010

Germany won Eurovision 2010

Yea for Germany!!!! Eurovision is a very popular song contest in Europe.  Before the actual competition there are several opportunities for Europeans to win a song contest in their own country.  I think similar to American Idol - the way they perform in front of judges and show the great and the absolutely ridiculous competitors. Anyway, Lena won the German competition in order to go on to Eurovision.  Well, there are many countries that tryout for Eurovision.  Some of the countries aren't technically considered Europe, but it is all in fun so they join in on the festivities. What...

Beware Of Puppy?

Beware Of Puppy?

I promise I am going to try and get a real picture of the German sign that says to beware of dog.  Tonight we were riding through the neighborhood and passed several signs that said to beware of dog.  We weren't sure how scared we should be because the signs also had a picture of a dog that looked similar to this:

Schützenfest in Stederdorf, Germany

Schützenfest in Stederdorf, Germany

Schützenfest in Stederdorf, Germany from David & Amanda Knapp on Vimeo. Schützenfest is like a carnival with several parades that last over an entire weekend. I believe the festivities started on Friday morning and lasted until basically Monday night. Schützenfest is celebrated in everyone town; this happened to be our weekend. It is a gathering of marksmen. We saw men with uniforms decorated with several medals. We decided to go to the fest Saturday night about 10PM. There was a tent with lots of people waiting for a concert drinking beer, bumper cars, booths to shoot targets...
